“Nitrile coated” is a starting point, not a specification. Within the nitrile family, three finishes perform differently in oil, water and abrasion — and choosing the wrong one costs grip, comfort or durability.
Here’s how to tell them apart as a buyer.
The three nitrile finishes
| Finish | Surface | Grip profile | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Foam nitrile | Micro-textured foam | Oily grip with breathability | Assembly, maintenance, general handling |
| Sandy nitrile | Heavier, grit-like texture | Maximum wet/oily grip | Oily metal, wet or slippery handling |
| Full nitrile | Continuous, sealed coating | Liquid protection + durability | Harsh or wet environments, heavier duty |
Foam nitrile
Foam nitrile is the default for general assembly and maintenance. The micro-foam structure traps oil on the surface to improve grip while letting air through, so the glove stays cooler in continuous wear.
Choose foam nitrile when: workers handle oily or lightly greasy parts and comfort over a full shift matters.
Sandy nitrile
Sandy nitrile adds a coarser, grit-like texture that bites into wet and oily surfaces. It gives the strongest grip of the three in slippery conditions, at a small cost in dexterity.
Choose sandy nitrile when: maximum grip on oily or wet metal is the priority — automotive, machining, oily fabrication.
Full nitrile
Full (full-coverage) nitrile seals the palm and fingers in a continuous coating. It trades breathability for liquid resistance and durability.
Choose full nitrile when: the glove must resist liquid ingress or stand up to heavy abrasion, and breathability is a secondary concern.
How to decide
- Grip vs breathability: foam balances both; sandy prioritizes grip; full prioritizes protection.
- Oily vs wet: all three handle oil, but sandy and full are for heavier or continuous exposure.
- Liner and coverage: the coating sits on a liner — confirm the liner material, gauge and cuff, not just the finish name.
Match the finish to the task
- Light assembly, oily parts → foam nitrile, A2–A3 cut option
- Oily metal, wet handling → sandy nitrile
- Harsh or wet environments → full nitrile
